Bullying in the Workplace - 2514 Words
Bullying in the workplace is one of the most significant challenges facing companies today. According to the Waitt Institute for Violence Prevention nearly half (49%) of all workers in the United States have been a victim or witnessed abusive behavior towards an employee (www.workplacebullying.org). Bullying in the workplace is similar to childhood bullying, but workplace bullies often operate within established policies of their companies. They commit deliberate acts against employees or co-workers disrupting the workplace. Bullies undermine the goals of the organization and create a hostile work environment for all employees. During my career I have crossed paths with several bullies in the workplace. I have been a victim and aâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦The attitudes and morale of the employees is directly related to job performance. A victim of harassment will not function at 100 percent efficiency. Victims of harassment are often distracted and are not able to focus o n their core responsibilities. Dr. Heinz Leymann conducted a study in 2002 that estimated the cost of bullying to an organization is $100,000 to $250,000 per year. (www.leymann.html) This is an example of bullying in the workplace negatively impacting the bottom line of the company. In severe cases of harassment an employeeââ¬â¢s health can be affected negatively. An employee can become physically and mentally exhausted from the abuse and this will lead to several days off work. A recent study found that a worker that has been a victim of bullying missed work 26% more then an employee who was not bullied. (www.mediationworks.com) Employees that does not show up for work will have a direct effect on the financials of the company. Providing a healthy work environment for employees and management is essential to the success of a company. Several employees who are victims see no opportunity for the harassment to stop and feel like the only option is to find a new place of employment. This decision validates the actions of the bully and significantly affects the morale of the remaining team members.
